Payment terminal UI for fast tap and QR payments

Overview

Designed a tap-and-QR payment terminal for a Costa Rican fintech, covering the full cashier flow from amount entry to receipt delivery.

Problem

A new POS product needed to ship fast and feel obvious to cashiers who'd never used it before — no training, no tutorials, no second-guessing.

Constraints

Single-handed phone-sized screen. Two currencies (CRC + USD). Amounts ranging from $0.00 to ₡138,650,106.08 had to render legibly on the same component.

What was broken

Majority of POS apps look like industrial spreadsheets — tiny taps, dense screens, modal hell. None of that flies when a customer is standing at the counter waiting.

Design decisions

One job per screen, one primary action per screen. Oversized typography (the amount is the screen). A warm cream-and-red palette designed to feel friendly rather than transactional. A keypad sized for thumbs, not fingertips.

Outcome

Shipped v1.0.1 in production, currency-flexible, supporting tap, QR, and receipt-by-WhatsApp-or-email from a single flow.
